A Well-deserved Tribute to John Ruiz

We’re so happy to see a photo of the statue of heavyweight champion John Ruiz in The Chelsea Record.

We were there in Las Vegas when John Ruiz knocked down Evander Holyfield and won the heavyweight championship of the world, becoming the first Latino to claim this title.

We watched John Ruiz compete and excel in sports at Chelsea High School. We watched him compete in the United States Olympic Trials in 1992 at the Worcester Centrum.

It was a thrilling and captivating experience for Chelsea residents, seeing one of their own accomplish so much in a professional sport.

Congratulations, John Ruiz, on this tremendous honor of having a park bearing your name in your hometown.

It’s a well-deserved tribute to your greatness as an athlete and for always being a true friend and a goodwill ambassador for Chelsea.
