Chelsea Housing Authority’s Chief Resigns Amid Furor over $360,000 Yearly Salary

Chelsea Housing Authority Executive Director Michael McLaughlin resigned his position Wednesday evening following Governor Deval Patrick’s demand that he do so.

The governor said he was outraged by revelations in the Boston Globe about McLaughlin’s $360,000 a salary – making him the highest paid director of a housing authority in the United States, even higher than the man running New York City’s sprawling authority whose salary last year was $190,000.

The CHS has about 1400 units.

The governor not only called for McLaughlin’s resignation. He called also for the resignations of all five members of the authority’s board of directors.

The governor said he was boiling about the situation and called it outrageous.
