Major Work on Mystic/Tobin Bridge in Late August to Close Lanes

Over the weekends of August 28 and September 11, Route 1 will experience lane closures. Where Route 1 passes through the Chelsea Viaduct portion of the combined Tobin Bridge/Chelsea Curves Rehabilitation Project, southbound (towards Boston) will be reduced to a single lane on Friday at 11 a.m., and northbound will be reduced to a single lane on Saturday at 6 a.m. Both southbound and northbound will be restored to two lanes of traffic by 10 p.m. on Sunday. Signage will be posted to alert and guide vehicles. This operation is necessary to construct portions of the viaduct which cannot be replaced with prefabricated bridge units (PBU’s)

During this operation, all on and off ramps within the Chelsea Viaduct work zone will be available to motorists as normal.

Work will not take place in the overnight hours and will take place as follows:

•Friday 11 a.m. – Friday 9 p.m. – Removal of the bridge deck.

•Saturday 6 a.m. – Saturday 10 p.m. – Placement of new deck panels.

•Sunday 6 a.m. – Sunday 10 p.m. – Form and pour cement closures and reopen Route 1 to two lanes in each direction.
