CHS track teams win two contests

This past Tuesday both the Chelsea High girls and boys track teams competed against Northeast and Mystic Valley, with both CHS teams taking away a pair of victories over their Commonwealth Athletic Conference rivals.

The girls ran their record to 5-0 on the season with a pair of convincing triumphs, 95-40 over Northeast and 99-35 over Mystic Valley.

Continuing to pace the team were the Simon sisters.  Senior Martine Simon was a triple winner in the 100 (12.59), long jump (17′-1″), and triple jump (34′-7″).  Martine’s mark in the triple jump set a new Chelsea school record.

Sophomore Stephanie Simon also was a triple winner in the 100 hurdles (17.11), high jump (5′-2″), and 200m (25.59).  Stephanie set a new CHS record in the 200, breaking her sister Martine’s record.

Also winning for the Lady Red Devils were: Yarid Deras in the two mile (13:12), Denali Mejia in the 400 hurdlers (1:25.85), Amanda Dias in the mile (6:29), Ana Chang in the 400m (64.36), Stephanie Rodrigues in the 800m (2:51), Masireh Ceesay in the shotput (29′-9″), and Jessica Martinez in the discus (91′-5″).

“This was a great showing for our team as we head into championship season,” said CHS head coach Mark Martineau.

The Chelsea girls were set to place their undefeated record on the line today (Thursday) against CAC powerhouses Shawsheen Tech and Essex Tech.

The Chelsea boys evened their record at 2-2 with wins over Mystic Valley and Northeast.

Leading the way for the boys was senior David Bui, who took two firsts in the javelin (119′-8″) and triple jump (37′-1″), as well as taking second in the 100m (12.12).

Other winners included: Wlfido Hernandez in the 400 hurdles (66.36) and the 800m (2:21); Jose Leclerc in the two mile (10:46); Alex Pedrero was a triple winner in the 110 hurdles (18.30), the long jump (17′-9″), and high jump (5′-2″); Justin Turner in the mile (4:59); Luqman Shariff in the 400m (56.63); Kelvin Diaz in the 200m (23.92); and Tony Bui in the shot put (38′-6″) and discus (89′-5″)

 

Stephanie Simon named MVP at State Fr./So. Meet

This past Saturday the Red Devil underclassmen traveled to Franklin for the MSTCA Freshman/Sophomore Championship Meet held at Franklin High School.

More than 1,500 athletes competed, representing all Division 1, 2, and 3 schools.

Chelsea sophomore Stephanie Simon had a monster day.  She finished first in the high jump, setting a new meet record with a leap of 5′-5″.  Stephanie then finished second in the 200 dash with a time of 26.48.

To cap off a great day, the talented sophomore finished fourth in the triple jump with another CHS school record of 35′-2.25″.  As a result of her incredible performance, Stephanie was named the meet MVP for field events.

“This was an amazing day for Stephanie and she was very much deserving of meet MVP honors,” said CHS head coach Mark Martineau. “Quite literally, the sky is the limit for her.”

The week before, the freshmen and sophomore members of the Chelsea High boys and girls track teams competed in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference Freshman/Sophomore Meet.

Simon won the high jump (5′-0″) and the 100 meter dash, setting a new Chelsea school record in the 100 with a time of 12.44.

Ana Chang finished second in the 200m in a clocking of 28.09.

For the boys, Kelvin Diaz was a double winner in the 100m (12.09) and 200m (23.94).  Also winning for Chelsea was Jazmany Reyes in the mile (5:15).
