Colwen Hotels has pulled a foundation permit to build the $30 million Broadway hotel that was in question earlier this year.
City Manager Tom Ambrosino confirmed that the company had pulled the permit, and machinery was on the site this week working. The site is on the Chelsea/Revere line next to the Walgreen’s.
The project is valued at more than $30 million.
“There was some concern about whether or not they would move forward, but they decided things were good in Chelsea and they’re going ahead,” said Ambrosino.
The company did not immediately have a comment on the milestone.
The hotel features more than 100 rooms and would be the fourth Colwen hotel in Chelsea. It was originally permitted in 2014.
Meanwhile, the City has also put out an RFP for a consultant to do an independent marketing study on the hotel industry in Chelsea.
Ambrosino said the concern lies in whether or not the City can absorb all of the hotel rooms now in use and those that are on the way. Ambrosino said he expected there to be more hotel proposals in the future.
“We don’t want to undercut existing properties and we want to make sure the quality is consistent with what we have now,” he said.
