The Chelsea High boys basketball team continued on its roll of late, winning both of its contests this past week in convincing fashion against Commonwealth Athletic Conference foes.
The Red Devils defeated Greater Lawrence last Friday, 66-40, and then took the measure of the Northeast Regional Vocational School, 76-52, on Tuesday.
Chelsea moved out to a 29-10 advantage at the half in the Greater Lawrence contest thanks to some staunch defense and never looked back. Sammy Mojica had his way at the offensive end, pouring in 31 points.
The victory over Northeast also was in the bag early. Chelsea took a 37-23 lead into the locker room at the half and then put on a 12-0 run after the intermission to zoom to a 49-23 bulge early in the third frame.
Sean Quiroz was high man for Chelsea with 27 points, followed by Mojica with 18, Carlos Vasquez with 14, and Kevin DeJesus with 12.
Coach Jay Seigal and crew, who now stand at a sterling 12-6 on the season, play at Lynn Tech tomorrow (Friday) and then host Shawsheen on Tuesday at 7:00 which will feature Senior Night festivities.
CHS girls drop two of three games
A depleted Chelsea High girls basketball team, which is down to just four of its original 12 varsity players who began the season, dropped two of its three contests this past week, sandwiching a 51-37 win over Fellowship of Christian Academy in between losses to Mystic Valley and Northeast Regional Vocational School.
Shuly Sejour was a force for the Lady Red Devils in all three encounters. Shuly hit for 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the 47-30 loss to Mystic Valley; poured in 23 points and snared 14 boards in the 51-37 triumph over Fellowship; and forged her third double/double of the week with 10 points and 12 caroms vs. Northeast in a 46-33 defeat.
Poor foul shooting doomed the Lady Red Devil cause in the Mystic Valley and Northeast contests, with Chelsea hitting on just 4-for-23 from the charity stripe vs. MV and just 10-for-34 against Northeast.
Carolyn Moni enjoyed her best game of the season with a 12 point effort vs. Fellowship, while Tatiana Fontes hit for a team high 16 against N.E. Voke. Moni had seven vs. Voke.
The Lady Red Devils, who now stand at 9-6 on the season, play at North Shore today (Thursday) and host Northeast Monday at 4:00 which will be highlighted by Senior Night ceremonies.
