CHS Boys Track

Last Thursday the boy’s track and field team traveled to Greater Lowell to defend their league meet championship.  The boy’s dominated the league meet and won by a margin of fifty points.  The Chelsea boy’s finished with 140 points, followed by Whittier at 90 and then Greater Lawrence (63), Shawsheen Tech (62.5), Greater Lowell (61), Lynn Tech (41), Northeast (24) and Mystic Valley (14.5).

There were six winners at the league meet.  Xavier Ortiz was a double winner in the sprints, running 10.9 in the 100 meters and running 22.4 in the 200 meters.  Both times were personal bests for Ortiz.  Senior captain Jon-Carlo Vega was also a two time winner and repeated his double from last year’s league meet in winning the 400 meter hurdles (58.3) and the 800 meters (2:08). Senior Cesar Hernandez was awarded the league meet MVP for winning the 400 meters (52.0) which qualified him for the state meet, he won the long jump (19’1”) and was third in the triple jump  (37’9”) and the 4×400 meter relay (3:49).  This is the second year in a row that a Chelsea athlete has been named the league MVP (Diego Reyes won the award last year). 

Ugo Cvjetan had two second places.  He finished in a time of 11:01 for the two mile and was a second out of first place in the one mile running 4:59.  Christian Ortega threw a personal best of 40 feet 10 inches in the shot put to finish in second place.  Senior captain Diego Reyes  was second in the long jump leaping 19’1/2”, Reyes was a member of the 4×400 team that finished third and also had a 4th place in the triple jump and a sixth place in the 400 meters.  Sophomore Rony Gomez threw a personal best of 102’3” in the discus to finish third.  Luis Hernandez, also a sophomore ran a personal best in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 17.1 seconds to finish third and was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles.  Senior David Romero also threw a personal best in the discus tossing it 102’2”, Romero was also sixth in the shot put.  Santos Hernandez finished fourth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles running 64.2 second and was sixth in the 110 meter high hurdles.  Francisco Colindres and Brian Pliego both ran personal bests in the 800 meters finishing fifth and sixth respectively running 2:18 and 2:19.  Norbert Simon finished fifth in the 200 meters running a personal best of 23.6 and was sixth in the 100 meters at 11.7.  The 4×100 team of Adan Rivera Jr, Christian Ortega, Kevin Luu and senior captain Felix Torres finished sixth.

On Friday afternoon, Cesar Hernandez (400 meters, 4×400), Xavier Ortiz (200, 4×400), Jon-Carlo Vega (400 meter hurdles, 4×400) and Diego Reyes (4×400) will be traveling to Cawley stadium in Lowell for the Class B track and field championship.

The Chelsea boy’s track and field team won their twenty fourth and twenty fifth straight dual meet against Whittier Tech and Shawsheen Tech last week.

The boy’s defeated Shawsheen Tech by the score of 85-51.  Winners for Chelsea were Jon-Carlo Vega in the 400 hurdles and the 800 meters, to remain undefeated in the dual meets.  Ugo Cvjetan won the two mile and the mile in a time of 11:34 and 5:14 respectivelly.  Xavier Ortiz won the 100 meters in 11.2 and the 200 meters in a time of 23.1, both personal bests and it also kept Ortiz undefeated in the league.  Cesar Hernandez ran 55.4 in the 400 meters and has not lost to a league opponent either.  Diego Reyes won the long jump with a leap of 18’ 11”.  Rounding out the wins for Chelsea was Luis Hernandez leaping 5’4” in the high jump.

Other notable performances for Chelsea were Norbert Simon who finished second in the 100 meters and 200 meters behind Ortiz and also chipped in a third place in the long jump.  Joseph Arroyo ran a personal best in the mile to finish second in a time of 5:30 and was also on the winning 4 x 400 meter relay team.  Diego Reyes finished second in the 400 meters and in the triple jump and anchored the 4 x 400 meter relay team to victory.  Francisco Colindres ran a personal best in the 800 meter race to finish second in 2:19.  Christian Ortega was second in the shot put and David Romero was also second in the discus.  Cesar Hernandez finished behind Reyes in the long jump at 18’ 5”.  Finishing in third were Dennis Sanabria in the two mile, Santos Hernandez in the 110 metet hurdles and  Rony Gomez in the discus.

After the league meet the boys will be competing in the Class B state championship at Cawley stadium in Lowell.  Representing Chelsea will be Xavier Ortix in the 200 meters and Jon-Carlo Vega in the 400 meter hurdles.  They will also be joined by Diego Reyes and Cesar Hernandez in the 4 X 400 meter relay.
