Longtime Chelsea resident

Gene Arthur Carter died on September 16.

Born and raised in Chelsea, he was the beloved son of Charlene Carter and the late Gene A. Carter. He spent his childhood and most of his life in Chelsea and was educated in the local public schools. After high school, he began working in the construction field. He enjoyed playing basketball and loved to go fishing with his sons.

He was the devoted father of Lesha, Gene, Jovan and Devon and a special friend to Nicky. He was the dear brother of Susan, Lisa, Gregory and the late Michael Carter and is also survived by his grandchildren, Shanelle, Jordan, Bliss, Vanessa and Myah. He was the uncle of Erik, Kairee, Justin, Stephon, Soleil, Natalia and the great-uncle to Mya and Isabella.

The family will receive visitors at the Frank A. Welsh & Son’s Funeral Home, 718 Broadway, Chelsea on Friday, October 2 beginning at 7 p.m. A Memorial service will be held at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are most kindly invited to attend. She was born on September 17, 1931, the beloved daughter of the late Geneva “Louise” (Crossman) Matuszak – Beauchamp and the late John Matuszak. She was a very dear friend of Bea Luzzato and is also survived by many friends and family in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Thomas A. “Tom” Callahan of Venice, Florida, formerly of Chelsea and Reading, MA, died September 22 after a brief illness. He was 81 years old.

He grew up in Chelsea and graduated from Chelsea High School in 1945. He was drafted into the service in 1946, was stationed in the Aleutian Islands and received an honorable discharge in 1948. He then enrolled at Atlantic Christian College in North Carolina where he excelled at football and baseball. He graduated with a Bachelors Degree in 1952 and married in 1953. He and his wife, Stella, raised four children at their home in Reading and spent summers on their island on Lake Maranacook in Readfield, ME. He was an Engineer for the B&M Railroad for 20 years and an Import Specialist for the Customs Department until his retirement in 1987. Shortly thereafter, he and his wife moved to Venice, FL.

His survivors include his loving wife of 56 years, Stella; daughters, Karen of Stoneham, Nancy and her husband, Irwin Rosenthal, their daughters Shannon and Marisa of Topsfield; sons, Thomas and his wife, Jodi, their sons Tommy and Brian of Wilmington, Mark and his wife, Christine, their children Hannah, Luke and Sarah of Ipswich; sisters, Dolly Locker of Vandalia, OH and Eileen Gregory of Chelsea. He was also the brother of the late Joan Cranford and the son of the late Cornelius and Josephine (Meade) Callahan.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Anthenasius Church in Reading on October 3 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society .
